Secrets to African American Roots: A Guide For Researching American Records
For some people, researching family history can be a daunting task – especially if your ancestors were slaves and were forced to take new identities. As a genealogical expert, Colette Thomas Smith has written a guide to help. Smith says negative historical events don’t have to hamper the adventures of tracing African-American linage.
The author says there are many specific records and procedures to follow with African-American genealogical research just like there are for other specialized groups.
The following sections are found in the booklet. “what to know and Do Before Beginning,” “Research Procedures to Follow,” Documentation of Records,” Knowing American History,” Military Records,” Pension and Land Records,” Historical Societies and Libraries,” Finding good Locality Help,” Special Research Books Available,” “African American Records,” Finding Aids and Information Sources,” Internet Web Sites to Search,” and Questionaires & Charts.”
